How eNVy winter guard came to be

A bunch of alumni from my high school group (Northern Valley Combined Schools from Old Tappan/Demarest) have been hanging around helping whenever they can. Many were seniors in 2020 – the season that was shut down in March (for obvious reasons!).

When the high school team was hosting their home show in February of 2022, they asked me if they could recreate their 2020 program and perform it that day. I said, “well I do still have the costumes in my attic and the flags are still here!). They practiced on their own, took home the costumes and washed them and performed that day! It was a really special moment.

One of the judges that day (Bernard Kierez for those who know him) said to me, “When are you starting that independent guard?’

eNVy winter guard became a reality in October 2022 and every year of Northern Valley is represented in eNVy! Of the 13 members, 11 are former Northern Valley students, one West Orange alumnus and one West Milford alumnus.
